ONE WARRINGTON: ONE FUTURE
WHERE EVERYONE MATTERS
A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY STRATEGY
FOR WARRINGTON 2009 TO 2030
What do we mean by sustainability?
A sustainable community is one which balances and integrates the social, economic and environmental components of the community; meets the needs of existing and future generations; and respects the needs of other communities in the wider region and internationally. The government has agreed five guiding principles of sustainability to form the basis for policy in the UK. For a policy to be truly sustainable, it must respect all five of these principles:
The partnership is committed to helping Warrington to develop in a sustainable way through the ambitions and priorities set out within this strategy and to ensuring that these guiding principles are taken into account by all of the partner organisations when developing their delivery plans.
1. Living within environmental limits
Respecting the limits of the planet’s environment, resources and biodiversity – to improve our environment and ensure that the natural resources needed for life are unimpaired and remain so for future generations.
2. Ensuring a strong, healthy and just society
Meeting the diverse needs of all people in existing and future communities, promoting personal wellbeing, social cohesion and inclusion and creating equal opportunity for all.
3. Achieving a sustainable economy
Building a strong, stable and sustainable economy which provides prosperity and opportunities for all, in which environmental and social costs fall on those who impose them (polluter pays) and efficient resource use is incentivised.
4. Promoting good governance
Actively promoting effective, participative systems of governance in all levels of society – engaging people’s creativity, energy and diversity.
5. Using sound science responsibly
Ensuring policy is developed and implemented on the basis of strong scientific evidence, while taking into account scientific uncertainty (through the precautionary principle) as well as public attitudes and values.
